Signal Mod APKs: the Real App vs 'Pro/Plus' Fakes
Published: October 7, 2026 · Updated: October 8, 2026
Search "signal mod apk" and you will find sites offering "Signal Pro APK" with unlocked features, extra themes, and no ads. It sounds like the WhatsApp mod scene, where millions of people trade the official app for a souped-up copy. Here is the problem: the Signal mod scene is not a scene at all. It is a trap. Everything those sites promise is either already free in the real app or does not exist, and the file you download is built by a stranger who now sits between you and every message you send.

Real Signal vs mod APKs, side by side
| Real Signal APK | "Mod" APK | |
| Who built it | Signal Foundation, a US nonprofit | An unknown person or group; no name, no accountability |
| Source code | Open source (AGPLv3); anyone can read and verify it | Closed; you cannot see what was changed or added |
| Signature check | Verifiable against the SHA-256 fingerprint published on signal.org | Impossible to verify; signed with the modder's own key |
| Message privacy | End-to-end encrypted; even Signal cannot read your chats | The modder's code runs inside the app and can see everything you type |
| Updates | Automatic, from Signal, with security fixes | Manual downloads from shady sites; usually months out of date |
| Cost | Free, forever, no ads, no premium tier | "Free" but paid for with your data, or worse |
| Account safety | Your number, your account, protected by registration lock | The mod handles your SMS verification; it can hijack the account |
| Extra features | Themes, disappearing messages, usernames, stories, all built in | Mostly cosmetic copies of features the real app already has |
The table looks one-sided because the reality is one-sided. A mod APK is someone else's build of a privacy app. Read that sentence again. The whole point of Signal is that no third party sits between you and your contacts, and a mod installs a third party directly inside the app.
There is no Signal Pro, Plus, or Premium
Let us be blunt: Signal Pro does not exist. Signal Plus does not exist. Signal Premium does not exist. Signal has no paid tier, no unlocked edition, and no premium features hiding behind a paywall. The app is fully free, and everything in it is available to everyone. Any site selling or offering a "Pro" version is lying to you, and the lie is the product: the fake name is bait to get you to download their file.
We keep a dedicated breakdown of this exact scam. Our Signal Pro APK scam warning walks through how these pages are built, what they promise, and what the downloads actually contain. The short version: the "extra features" are screenshots copied from the real app, and the download is either an old Signal build with spyware stitched in or something else entirely wearing Signal's name.
Why does this scam work? Because people are used to it working. WhatsApp mods trained a generation of users to believe every popular app has a better underground version. Scammers just copied the formula and pasted Signal's name on it. But Signal's whole design assumes you run honest code on your own phone. Swap in dishonest code and the encryption still runs; it just runs for the modder too.
What a mod APK actually does to your messages
To understand the danger, you need one technical idea: end-to-end encryption protects your messages between honest apps. Your Signal app encrypts a message on your phone, and only your contact's honest app can decrypt it. But a mod is the app on your phone. It sees your messages before encryption and after decryption, in plain text, the same way the real app does. The difference is who wrote the code doing the seeing.
A modder can, with a few lines of code:
- Log everything you type and send it to their own server, alongside your real encrypted chats.
- Copy your contact list, your profile, and your group memberships.
- Capture your verification SMS during registration, which lets them register your number on their own device and lock you out.
- Skip security checks like safety-number verification, so you would never notice a man-in-the-middle attack.
- Serve you a fake "update" later that installs something even worse, because you already taught your phone to trust installs from that source.
None of this requires elite hacking skill. Repackaging an APK with extra code is a well-understood process, and Signal's open-source code actually makes it easier to build a convincing fake: the modder starts from the real thing and adds the spyware on top. Open source is a strength when you verify what you install. It is a weapon when you install whatever a stranger hands you.
There is a second, quieter risk: you cannot verify a mod. The real Signal APK can be checked against the SHA-256 signing fingerprint published on Signal's download page, as our SHA-256 verification guide shows. A mod is signed with the modder's key, so the fingerprint check is meaningless. You are taking a stranger's word that the file is clean, and the stranger's business model is lying to you.
Will Signal ban you for using a mod?
Here is the honest answer, because several sites lie about it in both directions: no, Signal does not ban accounts for using modded clients the way WhatsApp bans GB WhatsApp users. WhatsApp actively detects and temporarily bans mod users; Signal does not run that kind of enforcement. Some scam sites claim "100% ban-proof Signal Pro," which is technically true and completely beside the point.
The absence of bans is not a green light. It is the absence of a safety net. WhatsApp's bans, annoying as they are, at least push people back toward the real app. With Signal mods, nothing pushes you back. You can run a compromised client for years, sending your most private conversations through someone's logging server, and no warning will ever appear. Frame the risk correctly: the danger of a Signal mod was never losing your account to a ban. It is losing your messages, contacts, and identity to a stranger while everything looks fine.
There is one more angle worth stating plainly. Because Signal does not police clients, the mod ecosystem for Signal is smaller and shadier than the WhatsApp mod scene. There are no famous modders with reputations to protect, no big communities reviewing the code. Every Signal mod is some anonymous upload on some anonymous site. The trust chain has zero links in it.
Do not confuse mods with Molly
One legitimate project gets unfairly lumped in with mods, so let us separate them clearly. Molly is an independent, open-source fork of Signal built by a known developer, with its source code public and its builds reproducible. It exists for a real reason: removing Google dependencies for de-Googled phones. It is not published by Signal, and we label it as a fork, but it is a transparent project with a real author, not an anonymous "Pro" APK.
The rule of thumb: a fork has a name, a source repository, and a reason to exist. A mod has a hype name, no source, and promises of "unlocked" features. Molly is the first; "Signal Pro APK" is the second. If you want Signal without Google services, Molly is the honest answer. If someone offers you extra features Signal supposedly hides, that is the scam.
Red flags of fake Signal downloads
Fake Signal downloads follow a pattern. Learn it once and you will spot them forever:
- The name has Pro, Plus, Premium, Gold, or Ultra in it. Real Signal has exactly one edition: Signal.
- The site promises features Signal "doesn't want you to have." Themes, anti-delete, hidden online status: either the real app has them or nobody does.
- The download is not from signal.org or the Play Store. Random APK sites, Telegram channels, and file hosts are where fakes live. Our fake Signal APK guide shows how these pages are structured.
- No SHA-256 fingerprint is published, or the page tells you to skip verification. The real download page publishes its signing fingerprint; fakes hope you never check.
- The site is stuffed with download buttons, pop-ups, and "fast download" premium offers. Real Signal's page has one button.
- Reviews and comments look bought, or comments are disabled entirely. Scam pages cannot survive real comments.
When in doubt, close the tab and start from the address you can trust: signal.org. Type it yourself; do not click through from the suspicious site.
Already installed a mod? Do this now
If you installed a "Signal Pro" or similar mod, do not panic, but do act today. The app on your phone should be treated as compromised:
Back up what matters outside the mod
Save important info from your chats somewhere safe. Do not trust the mod's own backup feature; copy what you need manually.
Uninstall the mod completely
Remove the app, then check your file manager for leftover folders from the mod and delete them.
Install the real Signal from signal.org
Download only from Signal's official APK page or the Play Store, and verify the signature if you can.
Re-register and turn on registration lock
Register your number fresh in the real app and enable the registration PIN. This stops anyone who captured your verification from re-registering your number.
Tell your frequent contacts
If you discussed anything sensitive in the mod, assume it may have been seen. Warn the people involved so they can judge their own exposure.
Watch for odd account behavior
Unexpected re-registration prompts or safety-number changes with contacts are signs someone else touched the account. Re-verify safety numbers with important contacts.
This is not overkill. You handed an anonymous developer the keys to your private communications. Cleaning up properly is the price of that mistake, and it is worth paying.
Getting the real Signal APK safely
The safe path is short and boring, which is exactly why it is safe. The current website build is version 8.29.3, package name org.thoughtcrime.securesms, and there is exactly one legitimate place to get it outside the Play Store: signal.org/android/apk/. The page publishes the SHA-256 fingerprint of Signal's signing certificate, so you can confirm the file you downloaded is really theirs.
Our Signal APK download guide walks through the whole process step by step, including the verification. If the Play Store is available on your phone, that is also fine: it is the same app, signed with a different key. What you must never do is grab "Signal" from a random APK mirror because it was the first search result. Search results are exactly where the fakes compete.
One last thing worth internalizing: Signal will never ask you to pay, never offer a premium tier, and never distribute through Telegram channels or file hosts. Anyone telling you otherwise is not confused. They are running the scam described on this page.
Frequently asked questions
Is there an official Signal mod APK?
No. Signal Foundation publishes exactly one Android app, and it is free with no premium tier. Anything called Signal Pro, Plus, Premium, or Gold is an unofficial fake, usually built to steal data or show ads.
Can a Signal mod APK steal my messages?
Yes. A mod replaces the app on your phone, so its code sees your messages in plain text before encryption and after decryption. It can also copy your contacts and capture your verification SMS.
Will Signal ban my account for using a mod?
Signal does not ban mod users the way WhatsApp does. That is not approval; it just means nothing will warn you that your client is compromised. The risk is data theft, not a ban.
Is Molly a Signal mod?
No. Molly is an independent open-source fork with public source code and a known developer, built to remove Google dependencies. Mods are anonymous closed builds promising fake premium features. They are different things.
How do I check if my Signal APK is real?
Compare the app's signing certificate SHA-256 fingerprint against the one published on signal.org/android/apk/. If the app did not come from signal.org or the Play Store, treat it as untrusted.
I installed Signal Pro. What should I do?
Uninstall it, install the real app from signal.org, re-register your number, enable registration lock, and tell contacts you discussed sensitive things with. Assume anything typed in the mod may have been seen.
